Our Travels Out of California

Here are just a sampling of the photos that Teri took after we left our friends Fay and Bert to guard our coach for us. If you have not read my previous post, scoll down and take a look at where we are now.
These first few shots are as we drive across northern California. This is a beautiful place. If you get a chance you should see it first hand. We left the Pacific coast and traveled all the way to Nevada, coming into the state at Reno.

These little towns take one back to the 50s. They seem unmolested except for the newer automobiles.

Shots from high up in the relatively short mountains. I don't think we got over a couple thousand feet in northern California.

Snow covered mountain caps were beautiful to look at, from a distance.

Here is Mustang Nevada. They are famous for more than the landfill. There is a certain "ranch" here that gets a lot of publicity.

This is not snow but a salty looking substance. Might be salt. We did not stop to taste it. Located on hiway 50 in Nevada.

Take a close look at this tree. We saw it in passing and turned around and came back for the pictures. These are shoes. I guess kids look for things to do along the lonely hiway 50, and I do mean lonely. We met very few vehicles on it. Could not figure why more folks don't take it until we hit the hairpin switchbacks. They were a bit hairy.

These are the shoes that did not hang in the tree and are located in the ditch below. Craziest thing but I guess non distructive, except to the tree holding them all up.

Early this morning, coming out of Grand Junction. Beautiful.

Just look at this. We had no clue what was about to come.

This is the Colorado River running beside the hiway. Hard to believe that it feeds the entire Southwest.

So, here we sit. No pictures of our near tragedy today. Hoping the hiway will be open to the east in the morning. We have about 100 miles before we hit the Ks. state line. It is closed from here to there. All of the motel rooms in this town are full up. We feel fortunate that we arrived at the early time we did. Was no one here then. I was asleep by noon and slept til 11 pm tonight. I won't have any problems going back to sleep either. Driving for 25 hours straight is a little much for a 53 year old guy like me, especially in whiteout blizzard conditions. That 10,500 ft. pass nearly "got us". We sure were relieved to get into Denver and see the streets free of snow, only slushy. I was trying to get off the 5200 ft elevation and had only a couple miles to go when we pulled off for gas. When we saw the motels we just gave in and here we sit. With a little luck we will get out of here by noon Friday and drive on home. I think its about 900 miles. We are dropping down into Kansas and across to Missouri and then from Springfield to home.
Whew, what a trip. I hope your shorts did not draw up as tight as mine did coming up that pass. I got us here though, thanks to that nice Colorado State Trooper. If you prayed for us to have a safe journey, we really thank you. You might help us out a bit on Friday also.
Come back when you have the chance. I am hoping the rest of our journey will be a bit less hazardous.
Dan
